Rookie Montero Earns Tigers First Shutout Since 2021

Rookie Montero Earns Tigers' First Shutout Since 2021

Detroit Ends 17-Game Winless Streak

For the first time since Tarik Skubal did it on June 19, 2021, the Detroit Tigers have recorded a shutout thanks to rookie pitcher Eduardo Montero's impressive performance last night. The 24-year-old allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out six batters over 6 2/3 scoreless innings.

Breaking the Skid

The Tigers have finally snapped their 17-game winless skid, which was their longest since an 18-game drought that spanned from April 27 to May 16, 2019. The victory also marks A. J. Hinch's first win as Detroit's manager, as he missed the first four games of the season due to COVID-19.

Montero's Impressive Outing

Montero's outing was a bright spot for the Tigers, who have struggled with their starting pitching this season. The right-hander threw 56 of his 86 pitches for strikes and induced 14 swinging strikes. He also displayed excellent command, with only one three-ball count in his entire outing.

Offensive Contributions

Harold Castro provided some offensive support for Montero, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Jeimer Candelario also chipped in with a two-run single in the fourth inning, extending the Tigers' lead to 4-0.

Looking Ahead

With the win, the Tigers improved to 1-4 on the season and will look to build on this positive performance in their upcoming series against the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox are coming off a disappointing 2022 campaign and are considered an underdog in the AL East this year.

Additional Notes

  • Montero's outing was the first complete game shutout by a Tigers rookie since Justin Verlander accomplished the feat on June 12, 2006.
  • The Tigers' bullpen combined to allow just one hit over the final 2 1/3 innings, with Joe Jimenez earning the save.
  • With Skubal currently on the injured list, Montero could be in line for more starts in the Tigers' rotation.
