25 Senators Press President Biden to Reverse Western Sahara Policy

Inhofe, Leahy Lead Bipartisan Group in Letter Urging Reversal

Significant Changes Included in Appropriations and Defense Bills

WEB Drafts for fiscal year 2022s appropriations bill and NDAA include significant changes on Morocco and Western Sahara. In a letter led by key Republican Jim Inhofe and senior Democrat Patrick Leahy, 25 legislators on Wednesday urged President Biden to reverse a recent decision on Western Sahara.

Rather than abide by the Courts ruling Morocco instead attempted to annex Western Sahara by force. Van Hollen, Inhofe, Leahy, and their colleagues wrote in their letter that "this action directly contradicts the policy of every U.S. administration for the past quarter century."

The senators stressed that Morocco's actions have destabilized the region and undermined the rule of law. They called on Biden to "restore U.S. credibility and advance the cause of peace and stability" by reversing the decision and supporting a just and lasting solution to the Western Sahara conflict.

Conclusion

The bipartisan letter from 25 senators sends a clear message to President Biden: the United States must reverse its misguided Western Sahara decision. By supporting Morocco's illegal annexation, the Biden administration has alienated allies, destabilized the region, and undermined the rule of law. It is now time for the White House to correct its mistake and work towards a just and lasting solution to the Western Sahara conflict.
